Digital Signage Overview | Digital Signage
The client:
Joy Mining Machinery
The need:
Joy Mining Machinery is active on five continents with a network of
55 facilities spanning the globe, so maintaining consistent branding and
messaging can be a challenge. The company decided to use digital
signage to address this need.
The company knew the signage would have to be administered from
one location. However, it also recognized that facilities would need the
flexibility to customize content for local audiences. It would also have
to support internal communications, such as its efforts to improve
manufacturing quality and efficiency.
The solution:
The Joy Mining Machinery team chose Black Box’s iCOMPEL
™
for its
digital signage because of its ease of installation and intuitive software.
Other products it examined were complicated to use or short on functions.
Plus, the system supports the electronic dissemination of job info to
union facilities, as well as engineering performance data to employees.
The results:
Nearly all of Joy Mining Machinery’s 55 facilities now use iCOMPEL
to present companywide content on lobby screens in a consistent,
unified way. However, local offices can also post site-specific messages
like production statistics or welcome messages for their own customers.
In addition to its primary use for lobby signage, their iCOMPEL
signage has become an interconnected system for improved efficiency
and manpower usage.
The company now uses iCOMPEL signage on the factory floor to
display “Kanban” inventory information in real time. It tells workers
which parts are in inventory and in transit, and in what bins parts are
found. It feeds information back to off-site fabricators, ensuring that
parts are being produced only as needed, and just in time for use.
By using digital displays, the company has started eliminating the
Kanban system’s paper tickets. It is now in the process of linking the
system to other plants, including its South African operations.
The solution, when fully implemented, will enable the instant
communication of manufacturing/inventory information around the world.
Also, by installing dedicated screens in employee-only areas of its
facilities in Pennsylvania, the company’s HR department was able to
eliminate driving from one location in the region to the next just to
post information on bulletin boards. This saved the company a lot
of time and money.

The client:
La Roche College
The need:
Located in suburban Pittsburgh, La Roche College is proud to offer
students a cutting-edge education and individualized attention combined
with technology. Carrying its student-focused technology initiatives
forward, the private Catholic college of 1350 students wanted to
enhance and centralize campus communications with digital signage.
The renovation of its library and updating of its technology made it
an ideal time to consider the installation of campus signage.
Specifically, it wanted to use the system for communication with
students, wayfinding information, emergency notifications, and the
central management of information.
The solution:
La Roche College ended up choosing Black Box’s iCOMPEL because its
pricing was very competitive and it provided all the features it was looking
for, including support for central content management, the ability to
override content for emergency notifications, and ease of use.
Black Box handled the site survey, system design, and installation
of the iCOMPEL units, the displays, and their mounts.
The installation included signage set up in the college’s campus center
and fitness center, and at entrances to the dining hall and the library,
where the college has set up its brand-new Providence World Café,
an area where students can relax in a coffeehouse atmosphere while
watching scrolling news on the digital screen.
The results:
According to the college, students, faculty, and other staff have come
to expect the displays and rely on them for the latest information, so much
so that college departments and student groups are beginning to submit
their relevant information to be posted on them.
La Roche College staff members simply log on to the iCOMPEL system
to access and upload videos, images, and other signage content. The
players regularly ping the iCOMPEL publisher unit for any changes and
update the screens as needed.
Public relations is responsible for general content of screens not
managed by food service and athletics. College academic deadlines,
sports scores, weather cancellations, and other up-to-the-minute news
items can be uploaded and relayed quickly throughout the campus with
the iCOMPEL driven system.
